Reading time by pace
| Pace | Time for 1,000 words | Example use |
|---|---|---|
| 180 WPM | 5:33 | Careful or dense reading |
| 238 WPM | 4:12 | Adult English non-fiction baseline |
| 300 WPM | 3:20 | Brisk, familiar material |
Reading is usually faster than presenting
The same 1,000 words takes about 7 minutes 42 seconds at the 130 WPM presentation preset before modeled pauses. Silent readers do not need to articulate every word or leave time for an audience to process delivery.
Oral reading is a separate task from silent reading and should not use the silent-reading preset automatically.
What changes the real time?
- Technical density and unfamiliar vocabulary
- Note-taking, highlighting, or editing
- Comprehension goals and rereading
- Age, disability, fatigue, and second-language reading
- Layout, interruptions, and device conditions
Use an individual measurement
Complete the reading speed test with representative material, then use the saved pace in the reading calculator.
The 238 WPM baseline comes from Brysbaert’s 2019 review and meta-analysis, which also documents variation across text types and reader groups.
